Germany & Islam

Dear Readers, especially outside of Germany,

The purpose of this post is to explain to you (or rather: share with you) the weirdness (some would say: madness) of the German debate on Islam.

It all started a few years ago, when then-minister of the interior Wolfgang Schäuble quite surprisingly stated that Islam was part of Germany. He got some criticism, but not too much.

A bit later then-President Christian Wulff said pretty much the same thing: He stated that Judaism war definitely part of Germany, but that the same was also true for Islam. He got a loooot of criticism. (And a lot of praise from Muslim & Immigrant Organizations. In fact, some even voiced suspicions that Wulff "had to go" because of this very statement. In reality of course he had to step back over an affair of alleged misconduct.)

Anyway, our now-minister of the interior Friedrich later took back what Wulff had said and stated that he could not see how Islam was part of Germany. He was lauded by all those who had critized Wulff before - and vice versa, of course.

Then there was a bit of a break. But now Volker Kauder, a prominent conservative Politician, stated that Islam, you guessed it, is not part of Germany.

The debate has thus been started again. And by now I believe it will not end any time soon.

If you think, this is a bit weird, given that there are around 3 million Muslims living in Germany permanently, most of them are 2nd or 3rd generation, many of them German citizens: You are not alone.
